The LAC Regional Resilience Hub for 2024 will amplify local voices and promote climate justice, on its pathways to COP29 and COP30. Emphasizing Collaborative Leadership and Action-Oriented Advocacy, it aims to prioritize nature and justice, enhance locally-led solutions, and transform climate financing to address critical issues and strengthen community resilience in the Region that resonates both locally and globally.

Key Messages

Heading to COP29, Fundación Avina seeks to build and promote conversations on climate justice through the democratization of global climate decision-making spaces and foster access to climate finance by local communities.

Some of the key messages that will be highlighted by the Regional Hub include:

  • Put Nature and Justice at the center of decision-making: Position nature and justice at the heart of public agendas by leveraging compelling actionable proposals and informing policies and decisions, including NDCs and sectorial and local policies.
  • Uplift frontline voices to democratize governance: Support, equip and amplify the voices of youth, women, and indigenous communities to influence and lead public discussions.
  • Elevate locally-led solutions: Identify and scale locally-led climate solutions, informing global spaces through local action, and ensuring global decisions resonate with local responses.

Transform Climate Finance: Enable stakeholders from the global South to guide the allocation of climate funds and work towards decolonizing development finance.

Programme of Events

  • Virtual meetings “Global Climate Agenda Advocacy Fellowship: Strengthening our capacity and collaboration to advocate in the UNFCCC”

Date: TBD | Weekly sessions

The Global Climate Agenda Advocacy Fellowship, an initiative driven by the Voices for Just Climate Action Alliance, of which Avina is a part, aims to strengthen the capacity and collaboration of civil society from the Global South to effectively engage in UNFCCC processes and meetings, such as COPs and SBs. The fellowship will employ a mentorship model to guide participants in developing advocacy strategies, with a particular focus on climate finance. The program includes two parts: an entry-level introduction to the UNFCCC and a deeper dive into specific negotiation topics and advocacy strategy development. Participants will be connected to experienced mentors to enhance their ability to navigate and influence the UNFCCC processes.

  • Webinar “Empowering Resilience: Joining the Race to Resilience in Latin America and the Caribbean”

Date: September 4th, 2024

This webinar aims to explain the advantages and processes of being part of the Race to Resilience campaign to allies in the region. Among these advantages is the opportunity to showcase and elevate their work, positioning the region prominently. Participants will receive support from the Race to Resilience technical secretariat to follow up on the registration process.

  • Virtual workshops “Support the incorporation of local voices in strategic conversations in the region and in UNFCCC processes such as GGA and NCQG”

Date: May – October 2024

This initiative aims to ensure that local voices are effectively incorporated into strategic regional conversations and UNFCCC processes such as the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) and the New Collective Quantified Goal on Climate Finance (NCQG). In collaboration with GFLAC and Argentina 1.5, the activities will include mapping and selecting relevant local organizations and leaders, organizing participatory virtual workshops to gather detailed inputs.

The process begins with the identification and selection of grassroots organizations, who can provide valuable perspectives on climate finance and adaptation. Virtual workshops will facilitate co-creation and open dialogue sessions, providing tools and resources for effective participation. Additionally, if necessary, specific interviews and surveys will be conducted with leaders of these organizations to collect in-depth opinions and case studies reflecting their needs and proposals.

The collected inputs will be synthesized into detailed reports, using qualitative analysis techniques to extract recurring themes and concrete proposals. These reports will be utilized by GFLAC and Argentina 1.5 to strengthen key messages and inputs, from Latin America and Caribbean, for the NCQG and GGA, ensuring that local perspectives are well-represented and influential in the discussions at COP29 and COP30.

The expected outcomes include effective inclusion of grassroots perspectives in climate finance inputs, increased representativeness of key messages at COP29 and COP30, and strengthened collaboration between GFLAC, Argentina 1.5, and local organizations.

  • Face-to Face meetings and potential events “Participation and Representation of Latin America and the Caribbean at New York Climate Week 2024”

Date: TBC

Fundación Avina will be present in key Global and Regional spaces, emphasizing the importance of democratizing the decision making spaces.
